The President of the United States recently announced a high tariff of 32% on Taiwan, raising concerns within domestic industries. In response, the Executive Yuan has proposed an 88 billion subsidy measure for the industry. The Mayor of Keelung stated on social media that the central government should actively formulate response plans to address international trade negotiations, industrial chain layout, and stabilize the Taiwan stock market. He will hold a joint industry forum with legislators next week to gather opinions from manufacturers and strengthen guidance for local and overseas companies.
The Mayor pointed out that the Keelung City Government has an unshirkable responsibility and has tasked relevant units with compiling challenges that Keelung industries may face, including order relocation, rising costs, and tariff barriers, and assessing the impact of price fluctuations on the daily lives of citizens. Keelung has two major industrial zones, Dawanlun and Liudu, as well as other important industrial partners. In the current changing international economic environment, the City Government will do its utmost to maintain industrial stability and sustainable development, and assist local industries in responding to challenges from three aspects.
- Establishing a communication and coordination platform: The City Government has invited representatives from manufacturers in the Dawanlun and Liudu industrial zones and legislators, planning to hold an "Industry Joint Forum" next week to gather industry opinions and propose specific policy suggestions, integrating resources to achieve rapid response and stabilize the industry.
- Immediate inventory of industrial risks: For export-oriented industries affected by tariffs, such as information and communication, electronics, manufacturing, and processing, a risk classification and demand survey will be conducted to serve as the basis for future policy formulation and resource allocation.
- Strengthening guidance for local and overseas manufacturers: Some manufacturers in Keelung have established bases in Vietnam, Thailand, and other locations and will face impacts. The City Government will cooperate with relevant departments and legislators to understand the situation of corporate operations and labor rights, timely reflect issues, and jointly formulate countermeasures.
The Mayor emphasized that he will continue to monitor international situations and work closely with legislators to ensure the sound development of local industries in Keelung and guarantee the stability of citizens' lives. Legislators also believe that facing changes in the international situation, industries must prepare in advance and cannot wait or afford to wait.
