Lai Ching-te stated that negotiations on tariffs with the U.S. would begin with the goal of achieving "zero tariffs," and he highlighted the resilience of Taiwan's economy, assuring that the government will actively respond to challenges. During a business forum, Lai Ching-te proposed five countermeasures, including expanding procurement from the U.S., increasing investments in the U.S., and eliminating trade barriers to support affected industries and promote economic development.

The President delivered a speech to the public via video, emphasizing that in the face of the United States' "reciprocal tariff," Taiwan will not plan to take retaliatory measures; as long as it aligns with national interests, companies' commitments to investment in the United States will not change. The President stated that Taiwan will use the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement as a reference when negotiating tariffs with the United States, starting from "zero tariffs."

In response to the United States' "reciprocal tariff" policy, the President gathered several industry representatives for a corporate discussion, emphasizing that the US tariff policy will significantly impact Taiwan. Lai Ching-te thanked all parties for their opinions and stressed that the government would take them into consideration in decision-making. He pointed out that in Taiwan's trade with the United States, the export amount reached 111.4 billion dollars last year, accounting for 23.4% of total exports, and that the Taiwanese economy remains resilient; with appropriate response strategies, the impact can be reduced.

In response to the United States' "reciprocal tariff," Taiwan will not retaliate but will make the US clearly aware of Taiwan's contributions to its economy. The President proposed five response strategies, including:

• Improving the reciprocal tariff through negotiations, forming a task force, starting from "zero tariffs."
• Expanding procurement from the United States, conducting procurement plans for defense and other products.
• Increasing investment in the United States to deepen industrial cooperation.
• Eliminating non-tariff trade barriers and addressing long-standing issues as soon as possible.
• Providing support to affected industries to assist in transformation and upgrading.

The President emphasized that Taiwan will position itself as a key player in the global economy, with "rooted in Taiwan, deployed globally" as the national economic development strategy, striving to meet future challenges. Taiwan has undergone multiple trials, demonstrating strong resilience and transformative capacity, and in the future, it will continue to work hand in hand to create a brighter outlook.
