The President of the United States recently announced the implementation of reciprocal tariffs on various countries, with Taiwan facing a tax rate of 32%. In response to this change, the city governments of Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung plan to establish special task forces to provide relevant measures to assist businesses in reducing their impact.
The Taipei City Industrial Development Bureau pointed out that although there is no actual manufacturing industry in the city, many corporate headquarters and research and development centers are located here, which will face direct impacts from the high tariffs imposed by the United States. The bureau stated that more than 90% of small and medium-sized enterprises in Taipei City lack the capacity to respond to policy adjustments or market changes, and they will establish an information integration platform to help companies mitigate the effects.
The New Taipei City Government is actively responding to the 32% tariff by organizing enterprises to participate in exhibitions in Germany and planning to explore international markets in the Netherlands, Poland, and Turkey. The mayor stated that subsidies will be provided for participating in exhibitions and that opportunities for international business will be matched to help manufacturers secure tangible orders and accelerate industrial transformation.
The Mayor of Taoyuan has proposed four major countermeasures to the central government, and the city government will also rapidly prepare seminars targeting servers and small and medium enterprises to consolidate the needs and strategies of businesses. The Economic Development Bureau has set up a task force composed of multiple units and experts to assist companies in exploring non-U.S. markets and reducing risks.
The Taichung City Government continues to monitor various assistance plans from the central government and has established a task force to help businesses connect with resources to mitigate the impacts of high U.S. tariffs. The city government will proactively understand the needs of operators and provide support for over 300 related industries in the area.
The Tainan City Government has formed a response team that proposes strategies such as market expansion, guidance for small and micro enterprises, and an industry dialogue platform. The mayor also indicated that emergency funds would be utilized to support related industries and assist operators in developing overseas markets.
The Kaohsiung City Government has established a reciprocal tariff economic response task force, implementing measures to create an industrial linkage platform, establish a guidance team, and a labor care group to help businesses reduce the impact of tariffs while ensuring labor rights. The Economic Development Bureau mentioned that the industries most affected in Kaohsiung include metal processing and exports related to servers and computer components.
