In response to Trump's tariffs, countries have reacted, with China and Canada implementing retaliatory tariffs against the United States. Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te announced an increase in investment and procurement from the U.S., but Kuomintang Chairman Chu Li-lun认为 this move is overly naive and questions whether it has been thoroughly assessed, expressing concern that TSMC's expanded investment might lead to technology leakage. He calls on the government to reevaluate its response strategy towards the U.S. and emphasizes the need to demonstrate leadership to seek the best solution.
In response to the high tariffs imposed by Trump, countries continue to remain vigilant; China and Canada have announced retaliatory tariff measures against the United States. President Lai Ching-te has previously announced plans to strengthen procurement and investment from the U.S. In this regard, Kuomintang Chairman Zhu Lilun responded on social media, stating that President Lai's response strategy is "too naive," calling on the government to reevaluate its contingency plans.
Regarding the measures proposed by Lai Ching-te to address the U.S. 32% tariff, Zhu Lilun believes this strategy is "obviously too naive." He pointed out that Taiwan has recently allowed TSMC to set up manufacturing in the United States and continues to procure military equipment and natural gas, but whether these actions have improved Taiwan's "favorable negotiating position" remains questionable. He doubts that the increased investment in the U.S. has been carefully evaluated and is concerned that TSMC’s expanded investments might lead to a significant outflow of Taiwan's "Silicon Shield," with core technologies also facing the risk of leakage.
In addition, he mentioned the medium- to long-term response measures proposed by other governments, stating that the regular routine work makes it hard to convince the public that the government has a "comprehensive plan." Zhu Lilun emphasized that the president must demonstrate leadership at this time. Besides requiring cross-party wisdom and consensus, there should also be a reevaluation of the response strategy to U.S. tariffs; "It is never too late to mend the fold after the sheep have been lost." The Kuomintang is ready to participate in political dialogue to jointly seek the best solutions.
