U.S. Secretary of Commerce Raimondo rejected the claim that the tariff list was generated by AI and explained why taxes would be levied on an uninhabited island that is only home to penguins. President Trump announced comprehensive tariffs on imports from over 180 countries, resulting in more than $6 trillion in losses for the U.S. stock market. Raimondo emphasized that the tariffs are set to be implemented, noting that this is to close loopholes exploited by countries like China, and denied that the list was generated by AI. Democratic leader Schumer criticized Trump but did not take action against Russia.
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross has dismissed claims that the U.S. is using artificial intelligence to generate tariff lists and explained why tariffs would be imposed on "Penguin Island." President Trump recently announced comprehensive tariffs on imports from over 180 countries and regions, including uninhabited islands where penguins reside. Secretary Ross detailed in an interview the reasons these small islands were included in the tariff scope.
This move led to investors losing more than $6 trillion (approximately NT$198.6 trillion) in the U.S. stock market over two consecutive days. Supporter of Trump, hedge fund manager and billionaire Bill Ackman, pointed out that if Trump does not alleviate the tariffs, the U.S. stock market could face a greater crisis on Monday. Nevertheless, the Trump administration's economic team has stated that no one can escape the high tariffs that will take effect on the 9th. The Secretary asserted on a television program: "Tariffs will be implemented as scheduled, this is no joke."
In addition, discussions have arisen online regarding Australia's territories, Heard Island and McDonald Island, which are close to Antarctica, have a population of zero, and host four species of penguins, yet are also facing a 10% tariff. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer strongly condemned Trump, questioning, "How can we impose tariffs on penguins while ignoring Russian President Putin?" Ross defended the imposition of tariffs on these two penguin-only islands, claiming it was to plug the "loopholes" exploited by countries like China. Reports have indicated that the Trump administration may utilize artificial intelligence to generate the lists of tariffs, but Ross has explicitly denied this, stating that many countries have not been included in this list.
