U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick stated on a CBS program that President Trump's new round of 10% tariff policy will take effect this week, with no room for negotiation. He emphasized that this policy is aimed at protecting American manufacturing and national security, and noted that the global financial markets have already been affected. Lutnick pointed out that the U.S. faces a problem of insufficient industrial productivity and must regain control of its destiny. Wyoming Republican Senator Barrasso supports this policy, calling it an important shift in American economic policy that will become a vital tool for strengthening the economy.
The new round of tariff policies proposed by U.S. President Trump is set to officially take effect within this week. The U.S. Secretary of Commerce stated on the CBS program "Face the Nation" on the 6th that this 10% across-the-board tariff on imports from all countries has "no room for negotiation," emphasizing that President Trump is not joking and that the policy will proceed as planned.
According to reports, this reciprocal tariff plan covers dozens of countries that currently have a significant share of exports to the U.S., and their products will be subject to higher tax rates. When the news broke, it immediately caused a huge shock to global financial markets, leading to the worst week for U.S. stocks since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, raising widespread concerns about an economic recession. In response, Trump urged the public to "hold on."
The Secretary of Commerce defended Trump's stance, believing that this policy wave is meant to ensure the U.S. manufacturing industry, supply chains, and national security. He stated that the productivity of the U.S. in core industries such as shipping, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors is already insufficient, facing an urgent need for protection, saying, "We must start to protect ourselves." This policy push also comes after Trump delayed tariffs due to negotiations with Canada and Mexico regarding immigration policies, marking its official launch.
The Secretary of Commerce clearly stated that this time "there will be no delay," as the President’s position is now unequivocal, and he claimed that this is the core philosophy Trump has long insisted on. "This is the moment for the United States of America to regain control of its destiny." He further pointed out that for decades, "the whole world has been taking advantage of us," and the President has now chosen to confront this head-on, "no longer tolerating this situation."
He emphasized that Trump firmly believes the U.S. needs to break away from external dependency and rebuild domestic strength, and he personally, along with the government team, will fully support this direction. On the program, Wyoming Republican Senator also expressed support, describing this wave of tariff actions as "a significant shift in U.S. government policy" and a part of congressional Republicans’ efforts to legislate the realization of Trump’s economic blueprint.
This blueprint not only includes this round of tariff policies but will also integrate the tax cuts pushed during Trump’s tenure in 2017, extending and expanding them. The senator emphasized that Congress is working towards "building a strong, healthy, and growing economy," with tariffs being one of the "important tools" in that effort. As Trump further advances his economic policy agenda, the U.S. attitude and practical measures towards the global trading system will undoubtedly enter a new phase.
