Lutnick further elaborated on the reasons for including these islands in the tariff scope during an interview.

The announcement of the new tariffs led investors to lose over $6 trillion (about NT$198.6 trillion) in the U.S. stock market over two consecutive days. Supporters of Trump, including hedge fund managers and wealthy individuals, pointed out that if the situation is not alleviated, the U.S. stock market will face a severe crisis in the future. The Trump administration's economic team claimed that no one could avoid the high tariffs starting on the 9th. Lutnick emphasized on a television program, "The tariffs will take effect; this is not a joke."

The discussion sparked among netizens is about Heard Island and McDonald Island, located near Antarctica, which have a population of zero but are home to four species of penguins, and will now face a 10% tariff. In addition, the Senate Democratic leader issued a statement condemning Trump's policy, saying it is illogical to tax penguins while imposing no sanctions on the President of Russia.

Lutnick defended the imposition of tariffs on two islands that are home only to penguins, emphasizing that this action is aimed at closing loopholes for "vessels passage" from countries such as China. As for media speculation that the Trump administration might use artificial intelligence to generate the tariff list, Lutnick stated that this is untrue, pointing out that many countries were not included in the current tariff list.
