U.S. Secretary of Commerce Luthnick dismissed claims that the U.S. is using AI to generate tariff lists and explained the reasons for imposing tariffs on "Penguin Island." Recently, U.S. President Trump announced comprehensive tariffs on imported goods from over 180 countries, including uninhabited penguin habitats. As a result, investors suffered losses of over $6 trillion in the U.S. stock market, raising concerns about the outlook. Luthnick emphasized that the tariffs will be implemented as scheduled and explained that taxing Penguin Island is aimed at closing loopholes exploited by other countries. Despite facing criticism, Luthnick denied using AI to compile the list, pointing out that many countries are not included in the tariff scope.
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo dismissed the allegations that the U.S. is using artificial intelligence to generate lists for tariffs, while also explaining the reasons for imposing tariffs on "Penguin Island." The U.S. President recently announced that products imported from over 180 countries and regions will be subject to tariffs, including a deserted island that is home only to penguins.
This new tariff policy has sparked panic among investors, with U.S. stocks losing over $6 trillion (approximately NT$198.6 trillion) in just two days. A well-known hedge fund manager pointed out that unless tariffs are reduced, U.S. stocks will face a more severe crisis on Monday. However, the government’s economic team emphasized that no one can escape the high tariffs set to be implemented. The Secretary of Commerce stressed during a television interview, "Tariffs are about to take effect, this is no joke."
Furthermore, there has been online attention regarding the Australian territories of Heard Island and McDonald Island, which have no residents but feature four species of penguins facing a 10% tariff. The Senate Democratic leader expressed strong dissatisfaction with this, questioning why tariffs are imposed on penguins yet no action is taken against a certain country's president.
Reports indicate that the Secretary of Commerce defended the decision to tax these two islands that are home only to penguins, claiming the move is to close "loopholes" in "shipping passage" exploited by countries like China. Additionally, some media speculate that the Trump administration may have used artificial intelligence to generate the list of items to be taxed, but Raimondo denied this claim, pointing out that many countries were not included on the list.
