Title Rewrite: The Disaster Induced by the Democratic Progressive Party: The Dual Impact of U.S. Tariffs and Chinese Military Exercises.
讀後心得
The chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party, Lai Ching-te, has been in power for twelve years, and Taiwan is facing a situation of isolation, with frequent military exercises from the mainland. However, the Democratic Progressive Party criticizes the previous Kuomintang government. The stance against opening up to American beef has now reversed, with a significant import of American pork, which has adversely affected farmers and children's health. The Democratic Progressive Party blames the opposition for the suffering and uses the name of unity to strengthen its own power, yet takes no substantial actions. In the face of the United States' tariff challenges, there are calls for Lai Ching-te to apologize and step down, hoping that national interests will be prioritized to facilitate the opposition in forming a cabinet to jointly address the crisis.

Chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party and President Lai Ching-te. The Democratic Progressive Party has been in power for twelve consecutive years; however, it has unknowingly pushed Taiwan toward isolation and difficulty. Regarding mainland China, the DPP has shown considerable leniency towards the Chinese Communist Party's multiple military exercises against Taiwan, losing grip over the median line of the Taiwan Strait, and allowing coast guard patrols to conduct ship inspections in the Jinma region, even intruding into Taiwan's 24-nautical-mile contiguous zone. Such humiliating incidents did not occur during Ma Ying-jeou's administration, yet the DPP willingly compromised sovereignty and criticized the Kuomintang in return. As for the United States, during the Ma administration's limited and cautious opening of U.S. beef in 2012, it led to the restart of the U.S.-Taiwan Trade and Investment Framework Agreement negotiations after six years of stagnation. At that time, the DPP initiated a "Anti-Tainted Beef Grand Parade" during the process of opening U.S. beef, shouting slogans like "Against Betrayal and Deceit," demanding a public hearing before negotiations with the U.S. and a national referendum, paralyzing the Legislative Yuan's proceedings for 120 hours. Lai Ching-te, then a legislator, even demanded that Ma Ying-jeou "should not use the U.S. to intimidate the people and should publicly apologize to the public." In the end, the DPP demanded that Ma Ying-jeou step down. Now, with the DPP in power, they have significantly opened the market to U.S. pork and beef containing ractopamine, with imports exceeding 16,000 tons within a year, yet have only received the U.S.-Taiwan 21st Century Trade Initiative, which has limited effects after the U.S. imposed a 32% heavy tax on Taiwan. In this process, the health of Taiwanese people and trade autonomy have been sacrificed. On March 31, the U.S. even required Taiwan to label the origin of U.S. pork, returned sprouted potatoes, and banned genetically modified foods from being used in school nutrition lunches, viewing these as "unnecessary trade barriers," attempting to fully lift tariffs. Since taking office, the DPP has made it difficult for farmers to make a living, compromised children's health, and left food industry operators with few options, making life increasingly difficult for the Taiwanese people. Shouldn't we follow the DPP's methods in opposing U.S. beef and launch a "Counter-Tariff Grand Parade" facing U.S. tariffs, demanding public hearings before negotiations with the U.S. and committing concrete measures to a national referendum? We should hold the current president to the same standards that Lai Ching-te once demanded: "The U.S. should not be used to intimidate the people; there should be a public apology for the social unrest caused by U.S. tariffs," and should call for their resignation. Unexpectedly, all the suffering caused by the DPP has been entirely blamed on the opposition and the disunity of the people! Even though the DPP once demanded a public apology from Ma Ying-jeou for opening U.S. beef, in March of this year, it mobilized government officials to hold eight policy seminars, and planned to conduct three hundred more in April, ultimately allocating a special budget of NT$88 billion, attempting to use the Taiwanese people's tax money to rectify the chaos of U.S. tariffs. Of course, as long as the opposition once again safeguards the people's tax money, the DPP can evade responsibility, annihilating the opposition in the name of unity to achieve a "united dictatorship." At this moment, as we face the challenges of U.S. tariffs together, we only see Lai Ching-te listening to music and Hsiao Mei-chin tasting spring rolls, while the DPP extensively spends money and engages in large-scale recalls, yet fails to resolve the underlying issues. Therefore, we urgently need Zhuo Rong-tai to step down, allowing the majority party to form a cabinet and reallocate the special budget. We hope the DPP can prioritize national interests, set aside differences, and enable the Legislative Yuan to achieve a majority cabinet with the opposition. After all, this moment demands greater unity and progress.
