In Tainung Township, Changhua County, the production of carnations accounts for over 80% of the country's total. However, due to the impact of climate on the seedling period, a loss of about 30% has been experienced. This year's output has decreased, and prices are expected to rise, so the public should pre-order. Farmers have pointed out that although the later-cultivated seedlings were not damaged, it is too late to meet the demand for Mother's Day. Currently, the price at the production area is about 8 to 9 NT dollars per stem, which is higher than in previous years, while the agricultural association's price remains at 20 NT dollars per stem. Those wishing to purchase carnations need to contact the agricultural association or flower farmers in advance.
The carnation production in Tianwei Township, Changhua County accounts for over 80% of the nation's total. However, due to climate impacts during the seedling period, losses have reached as high as 30%. This year's production is expected to decrease, and prices are bound to rise. With Mother’s Day approaching, the representative flower, the carnation, is entering its production period as scheduled. The head of the Tianwei Township Farmers' Association stated that this season's carnation production is insufficient, calling on consumers to place their orders in advance.
Due to unstable weather, the survival rate of carnations during the seedling stage has been affected. This year, the main seedlings of carnations are primarily for Mother’s Day demand. Although later-grown seedlings were not damaged, they may no longer be able to supply the quantity needed in the market in time. It is understood that carnations needed for Mother’s Day must have their parent plants cultivated starting from last July, with side shoots harvested in October, taking about five months to produce flowers.
A farmer who has been growing carnations for over ten years mentioned that this year's abnormal weather, along with frequent typhoons and drastic temperature changes, has led to a decline in carnation production. This not only created a shortage of seedlings but even resulted in poor quality of available seedlings, affecting their growth after planting and further increasing losses.
The head pointed out that although the main production area for carnations is in Changhua, Tianwei Township has the largest planting area, accounting for over 80% of the total in the country. This year's reduced output will directly affect market prices, which are already expected to rise. Currently, the price in production areas has already risen to between 8 to 9 NT dollars per stem, compared to 5 to 6 NT dollars in previous years. As Mother’s Day approaches, prices will continue to rise, while the price for carnations sold by the Farmers' Association will remain at 20 NT dollars per stem.
Therefore, the association recommends that those intending to purchase carnations should place their orders with the association or flower farmers as soon as possible to avoid missing the opportunity to buy.
