The chairman of Chunghwa Telecom, 簡志誠, announced the plan to establish an AI computing power center in Tainan, aimed at providing a one-stop AI service catering to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises. The first AI Data Center (AIDC) is scheduled to be operational in the second quarter in Yongkang, Tainan, and will incorporate generative AI technology. Additionally, Chunghwa Telecom will upgrade its data centers to enhance computing power to meet future AI market demands and plans to strengthen its collaboration with NVIDIA to actively expand AI applications. 簡志誠 is confident about the company's AI development, believing that Chunghwa Telecom will become a leader in the technology ecosystem.
Jian Zhi-cheng showcased the strength of Chunghwa Telecom in AI applications and plans to establish a computing power center in Tainan. In response to the rapid growth of AI (artificial intelligence) applications, the telecom giant Chunghwa Telecom, with a market value exceeding one trillion, is preparing to aggressively seize AI business opportunities with a dual approach. Our investigation shows that Chunghwa Telecom is targeting the future needs of small and medium-sized enterprises by providing comprehensive AI services and upgrading its data centers to AI computing power centers (AIDC). The first computer room will be operational in the second quarter in Yongkang, Tainan, and will integrate Chunghwa Telecom's research institute to invest in generative AI applications across fields.
Jian Zhi-cheng confidently stated, "The value of this 'Tech Shaolin Temple' is unparalleled, and competitors cannot be compared." In late March, at the Smart City Expo held in Nangang, numerous industry players showcased their talents, with vendor booths prominently displaying slogans about AI applications. Upon reaching Chunghwa Telecom's booth, visitors encountered an AI guide in the form of the Qing Dynasty's Emperor Qianlong, while on the other end, AI imaging technology could not only identify vehicles in violation but also monitor roadside garbage and noise, embodying the various application scenarios of "AI for all, AI applications reshaping all industries" mentioned by the chairman.
Even before the Smart City Expo, Chunghwa Telecom held a Tech Day to showcase AI models for management and customer service, as well as the power of five major applications. Our investigation indicates that as a leader in the industry, Chunghwa Telecom is responding to the government's promotion of the "AI Smart Island" policy by integrating all resources to aggressively seize the AI computing power market. "On one hand, we will upgrade the IDC (Data Center) to AIDC, integrating public cloud data storage and computing power rental, with Chunghwa Telecom's research institute involved in cross-domain generative AI applications," Jian Zhi-cheng shared his insights. Last year, Chunghwa Telecom actively expanded its computing power, joined the competition for Nvidia AI chips, and recruited over a hundred AI research and development talents, initially confirming the upgrade of IDCs in Taipei, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, with the first AIDC computer room set to be operational in the second quarter in Yongkang, Tainan. "We will provide computing power rental for new AI businesses, allowing Chunghwa Telecom to transform from a traditional telecom company into a technology company."
Jian Zhi-cheng then inquired, what exactly is IDC? How can upgrading to AIDC facilitate Chunghwa Telecom's transformation into a technology company? It turns out that the AIDC planned by Chunghwa Telecom is akin to a supercomputer, possessing a vast amount of CPUs (central processing units), GPUs (graphics processing units), power, cooling, and high-speed networks, capable of processing massive amounts of data and executing various algorithms, becoming the key core of AI computation.
As the domestic AIDC market enters a fiercely competitive stage, Jian Zhi-cheng is particularly optimistic about the competition because Chunghwa Telecom's AIDC customers mainly target small and medium-sized enterprises. He is also actively deepening cooperation with AI leader Nvidia, striving not to miss various investment opportunities from Nvidia in Taiwan. He is confident in his company's AI application layout, saying, "The technical leader of the AI ecosystem is indeed Chunghwa Telecom's research institute. This year's Tech Day was just a preliminary attempt, and in the future, we will work with partners to expand into overseas markets." Facing the business opportunities in AI, Jian Zhi-cheng expressed great confidence.
