Chunghwa Telecom is responding to the "AI Smart Island" policy and actively seizing AI business opportunities, with a 70% market share in its IDC business in Taiwan. Company General Manager Lin Rongci pointed out that upgrading IDC to AIDC can quickly meet customer AI needs and promote data uploads for the government and various industries. Chairman Jian Zhicheng stated that Chunghwa Telecom's research institute will provide comprehensive AI application services, emphasizing its technological advantages. Chunghwa Telecom has successfully applied AI models in the government and financial sectors and plans to expand to AIDC customers. Jian Zhicheng also values the acquisition of AI chips and will deepen cooperation with Nvidia to address power supply issues and enhance energy efficiency.
In response to the national policy of "AI Smart Island," Chunghwa Telecom has taken the lead in the telecommunications industry to seize the AI one-stop-shop opportunity. According to data, Chunghwa Telecom Group's IDC (Data Center) business has a domestic market share of up to 70%, clearly leading its competitors. The general manager of Chunghwa Telecom further pointed out that "these traditional IDCs, after upgrades, can quickly meet customers' AI (artificial intelligence) needs, and with the government's promotion of sovereign AI development, government entities, finance, healthcare, and small and medium enterprises can upload data through Chunghwa Telecom's services." In addition to gradually upgrading IDC to AIDC (Computing Power Center), the chairman of Chunghwa Telecom is ready to showcase its advantages, allowing the research institute, known as the "Shaolin Temple of Technology," to provide a one-stop service for AI applications. "The value provided by this 'Shaolin Temple of Technology' is extremely high and unmatched by other operators," the chairman stated with satisfaction. In fact, the AI models developed by Chunghwa Telecom's research institute have been successfully applied in government, finance, and manufacturing sectors, and "the next target for market entry is customers using AIDC."
Senior executives at Chunghwa Telecom revealed that in order to seize opportunities in AI computing power, the chairman, who majored in AI and holds a doctoral degree, understands the critical importance of obtaining AI chips. He stated that Chunghwa Telecom will actively engage in in-depth cooperation with pioneers in the AI field and will not miss investment opportunities in Taiwan. However, another challenge faced by Taiwan is the power supply. A technology expert stated, "The computing power center itself is a huge power consumer." Chunghwa Telecom, which has IDC centers across Taiwan, has a competitive advantage, "We not only rely on the research institute’s technology to reduce energy consumption and heat dissipation, but we will also use all-optical network technology to enhance energy efficiency, utilizing decentralized data centers to connect high-speed optical fiber networks, thereby effectively utilizing power from various regions to avoid concentrating all power in one location."
