According to reports, when passersby discovered the elderly man lying on the ground, most people merely slowed their pace and observed, but no one stepped forward to help. Although a boy attempted to assist, he was dissuaded by others, and some even misinterpreted the elder as trying to attract attention on purpose. As time passed, the people around ultimately chose to leave, without anyone providing support.

As a result, the family felt desperate, deeply saddened by the old man's passing, and angry about the indifference of the passersby. They decided to pursue the 10 passersby recorded by surveillance footage, demanding each person pay 140,000 RMB, totaling 1.4 million RMB. To them, the indifference of the passersby was the main cause of the tragedy, and they must bear responsibility.

This incident attracted widespread attention, and after careful investigation and hearing, the court ultimately rejected the family's lawsuit, stating that the 10 passersby were not required to pay any compensation. The judge noted that the passersby did not have direct contact with the elderly man, and according to Article 184 of the Civil Code, the general public does not have a duty to assist; only those with specific responsibilities, such as police and doctors, are obligated to help. Therefore, the passersby in this incident do not belong to the legally mandated group with a duty to assist.
