Hsinchu City is a hub for Taiwan's high-tech industry, facing challenges brought about by the new tariff policies in the United States. Mayor 藤臣遠 pointed out that while semiconductor products have been exempted, related industries are still under pressure. He has instructed the city government to take three major measures in response, including integrating business needs, strengthening industry guidance, and seeking central government subsidies. The city government emphasizes the need to ensure budget implementation to help businesses and the public reduce their burden, and will continue to fight for rights and collaborate to tackle future challenges.
Hsinchu City, as the core of Taiwan's high-tech industry, has attracted a large number of research and development and manufacturing companies in the semiconductor and electronic products sector. With the U.S. government announcing a new round of tariff policies on April 3, Taiwan's tax rate has reached 32%. Acting Mayor Chiu Chen-yuan pointed out that although semiconductor products have temporarily been exempted, the Hsinchu Science Park and related industries, which are primarily high-tech, still face considerable pressure. He hopes that the assistance plan proposed by the central government can effectively alleviate the impact on Hsinchu's technology industry.
In response to this news, Chiu Chen-yuan instructed relevant city government units to take the following three measures:
- 1. Continue to operate the industrial consultation integration platform through the Industrial Policy Council to collect demands and opinions from public associations, small and medium-sized enterprises, and export-oriented manufacturers.
- 2. Utilize the industrial service resources of the Xiangshan Industrial Zone Service Center to strengthen industry guidance, review supply chain structures, and provide technical support.
- 3. Strive for central government subsidies and maintain close contact with the Hsinchu Science Park Bureau to ensure smooth communication, so that the central government's response measures can be effectively implemented in Hsinchu City.
The city government pointed out that the Executive Yuan has proposed a budget of NT$88 billion to respond to U.S. tariffs; however, the specific related plans still need further detailed planning and explanation. The city government calls for this budget to be effectively utilized at the local level to help alleviate the burdens of impacted businesses and citizens. The city government emphasizes that it will continue to be the strongest support for citizens, striving to safeguard their rights and minimize the impact on Hsinchu residents and industries, while collaborating with all sectors to jointly face the challenges brought by tariffs, in order to build a happy and intelligent technology city.
