The chairman of Japan affairs at the Hudson Institute in Washington, Weinstein, recently stated that if a conflict occurs in Taiwan, Japan will play a key role in defense cooperation. He mentioned that Japan has recognized its own responsibility for national defense and believes that considerations of its national interests are more urgent than those of the United States. Weinstein predicts that China will not easily initiate aggression in the short term, but risks still exist. He believes that Trump will strive to avoid involvement in the Taiwan Strait conflict, and if China attacks Taiwan, the United States will take strong action. Additionally, he mentioned that Japan will implement proactive cyber defense, which will assist in its participation in the Australia-UK-U.S. security partnership (AUKUS).
The chairman of Japanese affairs at the Hudson Institute, a think tank in Washington, recently stated in an interview that during President Trump's administration, if a conflict arises in Taiwan, Japan's defense cooperation with Tokyo and Washington will play a key role. He noted that when incidents occur in Taiwan or Japan, Japan's national interests will be more important than those of the United States. Furthermore, Japan has realized that it primarily bears the responsibility for its own national defense rather than relying on the United States, which is a significant development.
When asked about the likelihood of Chinese aggression towards Taiwan or Japan's remote islands, he believes it is unlikely to happen in the near future, but the risks always exist. He mentioned that Chinese President Xi Jinping would probably not risk angering the US President, as China's economy has not fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. He believes that Trump would do everything possible to ensure that there is no need for military intervention in the Taiwan Strait conflict, but if China attacks Taiwan, the US response is expected to be very resolute.
He also stated that Japan plans to adopt a proactive cyber defense mechanism to guard against major cyberattacks, which will pave the way for Japan's participation in the Australia-United Kingdom-United States trilateral security partnership (AUKUS). If Japan can contribute to AUKUS submarine components, it will help this development. He added that if Japan subsequently joins as a fully qualified partner, AUKUS's strength will be significantly enhanced.
