(Data photo) The United States has imposed a 32% tariff on Taiwan, which has raised concerns for the export-oriented manufacturing sector across the country. Lai Liang-Tsai confirmed that President Lai Ching-te urgently convened representatives from various digital and traditional industries at the official residence today (6th) to emphasize the implementation of the NT$80 billion stabilization fund announced by Premier Su Tseng-chang, aimed at assisting industries in overcoming difficulties. He stated that they have been actively engaging in reciprocal negotiations with the U.S., but no concrete results have been achieved yet. Taichung City is home to 70% of Taiwan's hand tool manufacturers, and as the president of the Hand Tools Association, Lai Liang-Tsai leads a company called Jie Sheng Industrial, located in Wu Ri District, Taichung, specializing in the production of hex wrenches. He pointed out that the Hand Tools Association has over 420 member companies, with 95% being export-oriented, and approximately 40% of exports going to the U.S. The announcement of the 32% high tariff from the U.S. has significantly impacted the members, with reports that some manufacturers have had orders withdrawn by upstream suppliers. Lai Liang-Tsai mentioned that the president had already convened representatives from the electronics industry on the 5th and today invited 10 representatives from traditional industries and small and medium-sized enterprises. Industry representatives unanimously believe that the fundamental solution is to lower tariffs. During the meeting, Lai Ching-te also stated that trade negotiations are actively ongoing, but currently, no concrete results can be provided; he can only listen to the voices from the industry and inform everyone that the government is continuously negotiating.
