In response to the U.S. tariff war, Lai Ching-te recorded a video in the evening to report to the public on five strategies. The U.S. has imposed a 32% tariff on Taiwan, raising concerns among the people. In the 8-minute video this evening (6th), Lai elaborated on the government's countermeasures and proposed five major strategies. He emphasized that in the face of the current challenges, the government will work hand in hand with the private sector and hopes that the Legislative Yuan will support these measures regardless of party affiliation, to broaden Taiwan's economic opportunities.
Lai Ching-te pointed out that the U.S. government has recently imposed tariffs on many countries globally, citing "reciprocity" as the reason, and Taiwan is included in this, with the increase of 32% in tariffs undoubtedly impacting our economy. Countries around the world have responded, with some even adopting retaliatory measures, and significant changes in global trade and economics are expected. As an export-oriented country, Taiwan will face considerable challenges in the future and must respond cautiously to turn crises into safety.
Lai Ching-te thanked various sectors of society for their valuable opinions, stating that the government will take these feedbacks seriously and include them in decision-making references. He noted that if we analyze Taiwan's trade situation with the U.S. carefully, the export amount last year reached 111.4 billion USD, accounting for 23.4% of total exports. Moreover, among the products exported to the U.S., competitive information and communication products and electronic components accounted for 65.4%, indicating that Taiwan's economy still possesses considerable resilience. "As long as the countermeasures are appropriate and there is public-private collaboration, we can reduce the impact, so there is no need for everyone to panic."
Facing the U.S. "reciprocal tariffs," Lai Ching-te stated that Taiwan does not intend to adopt retaliatory tariff measures. The commitments by businesses to invest in the U.S. that align with national interests will not change; Taiwan wants to make the U.S. understand the important role Taiwan plays in its economic development. Furthermore, Taiwan will actively monitor global economic changes, strengthen industrial cooperation with the U.S., enhance its position in the global supply chain, and adopt the following five strategies in response.
- Strategy One: Negotiate to improve reciprocal tariffs. A negotiation team led by Vice Premier Chen Li-jen has been formed, starting from a "zero tariff" negotiation point for both sides, and expanding procurement and investment in the U.S. to reduce trade deficits.
- Strategy Two: Introduce an industrial support plan to provide necessary support for impacted industries, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, and assist them in innovative upgrades and transformations.
- Strategy Three: Develop a medium- and long-term economic development plan. The government will strengthen cooperation with allied countries to open up diversified markets and promote Taiwan's industrial upgrading.
- Strategy Four: Promote a "Taiwan Plus One" global layout to stabilize Taiwan's investment environment, assist businesses in adjusting production bases overseas, and strengthen industrial cooperation with the U.S.
- Strategy Five: Initiate an industrial listening tour to address industry issues at any time, ensuring that policies meet actual demands.
Lai Ching-te urged the public that over the past half-century, Taiwan has overcome several severe tests, transforming crises into opportunities to upgrade the economy and showcase greater resilience. In the face of current challenges, he emphasized that cooperation between the government and the private sector will be key, and hopes that the support from the Legislative Yuan can create a brighter future for Taiwan's economy.
