The United States' reciprocal tariffs are about to be implemented. President Lai Ching-te publicly addressed the situation for the first time on Sunday night, proposing five major countermeasures. He emphasized that there will be no tariff retaliation and did not rule out the possibility of referencing the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to initiate negotiations for "zero tariffs" between Taiwan and the United States. Additionally, President Lai stated that the country's economic development strategy will be adjusted to strengthen Taiwan-U.S. industrial cooperation and that a series of listening tours will begin to provide support for domestic enterprises. President Lai expressed, "As long as the response measures are appropriate and there is public-private collaboration, we can mitigate the impact. I ask everyone to remain calm." In his first public statement after the implementation of the reciprocal tariffs, President Lai not only called for emotional stability but also proposed specific solutions.

Regarding the tariff issue, President Lai stated, "Taiwan has formed a special negotiation team, led by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun. The negotiation content will refer to the USMCA, starting from the "zero tariffs" between Taiwan and the United States, and strengthen procurement from the United States to reduce the trade deficit, addressing the U.S. concerns over long-standing high-tech export control and the issues of dumping low-priced products." Besides continuously negotiating with the U.S. to reduce the trade deficit, the country’s economic development strategy will also be adjusted accordingly. President Lai pointed out, "We will be rooted in Taiwan while strengthening our global layout, enhancing our connections with the U.S. market and utilizing supply chain restructuring to reinforce Taiwan-U.S. industrial cooperation."

In order to strengthen cooperation with the United States, President Lai and his cabinet team have also launched a listening tour. President Lai stated, "I and President Chuo Jung-tai will separately listen to the opinions of the industry to address issues promptly, making policies more aligned with actual needs. President Chuo has recently proposed nine aspects and 20 measures, and in the future, corresponding support will be provided based on the impacts and characteristics of different industries to assist industries in innovation, upgrading, and transformation." The government will take multiple approaches, aiming to minimize the negative impacts of the reciprocal tariffs.
