President Lai Ching-te delivered a video statement regarding the United States imposing a 32% tariff on Taiwan, emphasizing that Taiwan will not retaliate with tariffs and will continue to support investments in the U.S. Lai Ching-te stated that despite the challenges, Taiwan's trade with the U.S. remains resilient. The government will negotiate and formulate response strategies regarding reciprocal tariffs, including plans to increase procurements from the U.S. and deepen Taiwan-U.S. cooperation. He hopes to maintain economic stability and development through collaboration and policy adjustments.

The President of the United States imposed a 32% equivalent tariff on Taiwan. President 賴清德 today delivered a speech to the nation via video, stating that in response to the "equivalent tariffs" from the United States, Taiwan does not intend to retaliate with tariffs; as long as it aligns with national interests, commitments to investment in the U.S. will not change. 賴清德 pointed out that Taiwan's tariff negotiations with the United States will reference the U.S.-Canada-Mexico Free Trade Agreement, starting discussions from a "zero tariff" basis.

On the 6th, 賴清德 delivered a video address regarding the U.S. "equivalent tariff" policy, reiterating that Taiwan will not retaliate with tariffs; commitments to investment in the U.S. will also remain unchanged as long as they align with national interests. The spokesperson for the Presidential Office disclosed to the media that 賴清德 has invited industry representatives for a second corporate forum and will once again share perspectives with the public via video after the forum.

賴清德 pointed out that the U.S. government recently announced the imposition of tariffs on various countries, significantly impacting Taiwan. Other nations have responded, and some countries have adopted retaliatory measures, leading to major changes in the global economic and trade landscape. He emphasized that Taiwan is an export-oriented country and must be cautious in the face of challenges.

賴清德 expressed gratitude for the opinions from all sectors of society and stated that they will serve as a reference for decision-making. He noted that Taiwan's exports to the U.S. reached 111.4 billion USD last year, accounting for 23.4% of total exports, with most products sold to countries other than the U.S. Competitive products made up 65.4% of exports to the U.S., indicating the resilience of Taiwan's economy. Appropriate responses can minimize the impact, and he urged everyone to remain calm.

賴清德 proposed five strategies to respond to equivalent tariffs:

• Negotiate to fully strive for improvements in tariffs, starting discussions from "zero tariff."
• Expand procurement from the United States to reduce the trade deficit and actively promote necessary procurement.
• Increase investment in the U.S. and deepen industrial cooperation.
• Eliminate non-tariff trade barriers to facilitate smooth negotiations.
• Address issues related to export controls on high-tech products to promote fair trade.

In addition, 賴清德 will propose support plans for affected industries and release a mid- to long-term economic development plan, strengthening cooperation with friendly countries to promote industrial integration and upgrades. He hopes that through these measures, assistance can be provided to enterprises to continue developing in adversity and work together to overcome current challenges.

In the face of U.S. tariffs, 賴清德 called on the public to work together, stating that the government will do its utmost to create a favorable economic environment.
