The production of carnations in Tianwei Township, Changhua County accounts for 80% of the nation's total, but due to climate impacts during the seeding period, a loss of about 30% is expected, leading to anticipated price increases this year. With Mother's Day approaching, farmers remind the public to place their orders early. As supply shortages arise, the farm gate price of carnations has risen to 8 to 9 NT dollars each, compared to 5 to 6 NT dollars in previous years. Even with the price increase this year, the agricultural association maintains a selling price of 20 NT dollars each.

With Mother's Day approaching, the production period for carnations is also reaching its peak. The secretary-general of the local farmers' association stated that the unstable weather during the seedling period led to a poor growth rate for the carnations, resulting in a loss of about 30%. This batch of reduced-output carnations is primarily meant to meet Mother’s Day demand. Although the later-stage weather has stabilized and the cultivated carnations were not damaged, they may no longer be able to meet market demand on time. Therefore, this year, the price of carnations is expected to be higher than in previous years.

According to farmers, the planting of carnations requires cultivating mother plants in July of the previous year, harvesting side shoots in October, and it takes about five months to cut flowers. This year’s weather has been abnormal, experiencing typhoon rains and fluctuations in temperature, which led to a reduction in seedlings, difficulties in purchasing seedlings, and poor quality of seedlings. After planting, there could be losses of up to 20%. Even though the price of carnations has increased compared to previous years, it still cannot compensate for the losses faced by farmers.

Tianwei is a major carnation production area in the country, with a planting area of about 25 hectares. This year's decrease in production will inevitably affect prices. Currently, the market price has reached 8 to 9 NTD per stem, whereas in previous years during this period, it was only 5 to 6 NTD, indicating a significant price increase. It is expected that as Mother’s Day approaches, prices will rise further. However, the price of carnations sold by the farmers' association this year remains at 20 NTD per stem.

The farmers' association reminds that due to the insufficient production of carnations, individuals who wish to purchase them should place orders with the association or flower farmers as early as possible.
