The flu epidemic is still present, and doctors indicate that it is mainly type B influenza at this time. The Taichung City Health Bureau pointed out that after the long holiday, there have been respiratory and diarrhea cluster events in the campuses. Pediatricians remind students to wash their hands frequently, wear masks when symptoms appear, and take a leave of absence to rest. From October of last year until now, Taichung City has reported 147 cases of severe influenza, with 32 fatalities. Although the epidemic has slightly eased, personal protection still needs to be strengthened due to the movement of people after the holiday.
The flu epidemic has not yet subsided, and doctors point out that current clinical tests are primarily focused on type B influenza. After a long 4-day holiday, the public is beginning to resume normal working and school life. The Taichung City Health Bureau stated that although there was a slight alleviation of flu and norovirus outbreaks before the holiday, there were still 3 cases of respiratory cluster infections and 1 case of diarrhea cluster infections in schools last week. Pediatricians mentioned that several students in their classes have contracted the flu recently, and siblings in families have also sequentially been affected. Clinical observations show that type B influenza is the main form, and they call on students to maintain good hand hygiene on campus, wear masks if they have respiratory symptoms, and observe cough etiquette, as those with fever should rest at home.
According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control, from last October's flu season to March 29 of this year, Taichung City has recorded 147 cases of flu-related severe illness, with a cumulative total of 32 unfortunate deaths. As of March 29, there are still 19 severe patients receiving treatment in hospitals. In the 13th week of this year (from March 23 to 29), the number of visits for flu-like symptoms in outpatient and emergency departments in Taichung City were 17,445 and 1,128, respectively, while the number of visits for diarrhea was 21,644 and 1,727. During this period, the health bureau received reports of 3 flu clusters and 1 diarrhea cluster in schools. Fortunately, all symptomatic students have recovered after seeking medical attention and returned to classes.
Pediatricians pointed out that flu-like symptoms and norovirus outbreaks saw a slight uptick before the Qingming holiday, but there are still many cluster cases in schools and families. Recently, a pair of brothers sought medical attention for the flu, with the younger brother diagnosed with type B influenza on March 31 and prescribed public-funded antiviral medication. However, after the older brother was infected and checked on April 1, he was also diagnosed with type B influenza. Due to policy changes on public-funded antiviral medication starting from April 1, young students are now required to purchase medication out of pocket, leading their mother to lament, "The price of a one-day delay is so high!" Moreover, in one class of ninth-grade students, 5 students consecutively showed symptoms such as cough, runny nose, low fever, and fatigue. The teacher asked students showing signs of a cold to go to the clinic for screening, and the results all tested positive for type B influenza. Doctors emphasize that the clinical screening for type B influenza has now surpassed that for type A influenza, and it is common for outbreaks to rebound after long holidays due to widespread public movement. They urge that even though temperatures are rising, the virus remains active, and the public should strengthen personal hygiene measures to avoid transmission, and students with fever should not attend classes but rather stay home to recuperate.
