A Malaysian man was charged by the Taoyuan District Prosecutor's Office for violating the Civil Aviation Act after he smoked an electronic cigarette in the economy class of an Evergreen Airlines flight last November due to a nicotine craving. Flight attendants intervened and reported the incident to the authorities. This incident highlights the prohibition of smoking on flights.

A Malaysian man took a flight on Evergreen Airline to our country last November. During the flight, due to his nicotine cravings, he surprisingly smoked an e-cigarette in his seat, for which the Taoyuan District Prosecutor's Office prosecuted him for violating civil aviation laws.

This man was discovered smoking in his seat in the economy class of the Evergreen flight 75 minutes before landing. A flight attendant noticed and warned him, then informed the aviation police. After an investigation, the Taoyuan District Prosecutor's Office prosecuted him for violating civil aviation laws.

Another incident occurred on a Japan Airlines flight departing from New Chitose Airport. After the flight arrived at Itami Airport, during a routine check after landing, the crew found cigarette butts in the restroom and immediately notified the police. The aviation police boarded the plane to investigate, resulting in all passengers being unable to disembark and having to wait on board until the police completed their inspection.

On China Airlines flight CI23, which took off from California, USA, in February this year, a woman with dual Taiwanese and American nationality hid in the restroom to smoke an e-cigarette due to her cravings. The smoke alarm went off, and she was ultimately also prosecuted for violating civil aviation laws.

The indictment states that the Malaysian man took Evergreen Airlines flight BR228 to Taiwan for a business trip on November 25, 2024. The flight departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 3:30 PM and had an approximate flight time of 4 hours and 55 minutes. The man knew that the aircraft doors were closed during the flight and that staff had announced that it was not allowed to use devices that interfere with flight and communication on board. However, at 6:50 PM that evening, he smoked an e-cigarette in seat 60B in economy class, and was ultimately stopped by a flight attendant.

The prosecutor, based on the man's testimony, the flight attendant's statements, the seating plan of the flight, and the safety incident report, believed he violated the relevant articles of civil aviation law, seized the RELX brand e-cigarette he used, and requested a summary judgment against him.
