Many foreign customers find that in Japan, a single service may involve multiple stylists assisting simultaneously, providing a VIP treatment experience. Additionally, after shampooing, customers can enjoy a free massage, which is not commonly found in other countries. Many salons also offer complimentary beverages and even allow customers to choose from different shampoos and conditioners. Although some customers may encounter communication difficulties, overall, Japan's hair services are very satisfying in terms of technique and quality, making them worth the trip for foreigners to experience.

These services are unexpectedly valuable! The surprising experience of foreigners at hair salons in Japan. When walking on the streets of Japan, seeing fashionably dressed Japanese people always makes one want to look like them. However, entering a strange hair salon requires some courage, as the language barrier is often a challenge; if the styling fails, how can the journey be photographed? Before the actual experience, we asked several foreigners living in Japan about their hair salon experiences, listened to their thoughts, and found out how it differs from services in their own countries. Many foreigners in Japan receive shoulder to head massage services after washing their hair. Originally there just to get a haircut, but unexpectedly experiencing such treatment surprised everyone, as this service is quite popular.

• “Washing hair in Japan is completely free! In Malaysia, just washing hair incurs a charge.” (Malaysia/Female/30s)

Being able to enjoy multiple hair washing services for free during a haircut left this woman from Malaysia very impressed. In some countries, they wouldn’t even wash hair before dyeing it, so such service in Japan feels particularly generous.

• “I stayed in that hair salon for an hour and surprisingly received free drinks; this is an enjoyment that cannot be found in other countries!” (China/Female/30s)

Many hair salons offer drinks such as herbal tea or coffee as part of their hospitality, and some even provide paid meals or smoothies, allowing clients to enjoy food during the haircut, which is truly delightful.

During the dyeing or perming process, to avoid chemicals getting on the ears, salons use special protectors, and during the hair wash, they also gently cover the face with a towel or tissue; this level of service is not found in some countries.

• “The hair salon I like has quite cheap prices, and the haircut technique surpasses that of the US. The staff are like friends, so I’ve always been accustomed to going to the same shop.” (USA/Male/30s)

Haircut prices in the US are relatively high, but this male from the US stated during an interview that his experience in Japan brought him much satisfaction compared to American salons. Although the techniques of different stylists may vary, the superb value of the service is delightful. While Japan’s prices may not be the cheapest, the professionalism of the stylists and their care for clients receive high praise.

However, there have also been some unsatisfactory experiences; for instance, even though the desired hairstyle was communicated, due to an inability to communicate in English, the final hairstyle ended up looking strange.

While many foreigners have expressed positive evaluations of hair services in Japan, some clients have shown disappointment at their inability to achieve their desired hairstyle. Next time, perhaps using translation tools could help the stylists understand their needs better.

In conclusion, whether regarding technique or service quality, Japanese hair salons exceed expectations and leave clients satisfied.
