Recently, an airport security oversight occurred in Japan. A 73-year-old American traveler accidentally carried luggage containing a firearm through the airport security checks of both the United States and Japan, successfully entering the country. It was not until the next day, when the traveler was about to board a cruise, that he admitted to the cruise staff that he had a firearm with him.
The traveler has since been arrested by Japanese police, who found the firearm and ammunition in the location where he had discarded them. The customs officials responsible for the traveler’s entry inspection stated that the case is under investigation and could not provide further comments.
According to reports, the incident occurred on March 22. The 73-year-old traveler departed from Honolulu Airport in Hawaii and successfully passed through security at Kansai Airport in Japan. However, he only realized that he had inadvertently brought a self-defense firearm to Japan when he arrived at his hotel and was organizing his luggage.
Police indicated that the traveler voluntarily informed cruise staff on the 23rd that he was carrying a firearm, after which police arrived on the scene and discovered a revolver in his luggage. Additionally, they found three bullets in a trash bin at the dock. The traveler stated that he chose to discard the bullets out of concern that possessing both the firearm and ammunition would lead to more serious charges.
In response to police questioning, the traveler explained that he delayed informing the cruise staff until boarding due to language barriers with hotel staff, fearing a misunderstanding.
After an initial investigation, police believe that the handgun passed through customs checks at both Honolulu and Kansai airports inside the suitcase. Honolulu International Airport stated that as long as a passenger’s firearm is properly packaged upon departure, they will not conduct additional inspections. As for Kansai Airport customs, they stated that the case is still under investigation and could not provide further clarification.
