US Study: Sleeping Over 9 Hours Daily May Lower Cognitive Function

A recent study from the University of Texas reveals that sleeping too much can negatively impact cognitive functions. The research analyzed 1,853 participants aged between 27 and 85, finding that those who sleep more than 9 hours per night may experience a decline in cognitive abilities, particularly among individuals with depression.
According to the findings, excessive sleep could be an indicator of underlying health issues. Dr. Hsin-Chien Lee, director of the Sleep Research Center at Taipei Medical University, stated, "If one consistently sleeps more than 9 hours, it may suggest health problems such as sleep apnea or chronic insomnia." Thus, self-monitoring and adjusting sleep patterns is essential.
Dr. Lee recommends keeping a sleep log for one to two weeks to determine one’s optimal sleep duration. For instance, a discrepancy of no more than an hour between weekday and weekend sleep is ideal to gauge individual sleep needs.
Good sleep helps with brain detoxification and bodily repair, but both insufficient and excessive sleep require adjustment to maintain well-being. Researchers urge individuals to consider their sleep duration seriously, making healthy lifestyle choices a daily priority.
