The Chairperson of the Mainland Affairs Council, Chiou Tsui-Cheng, recently met with UK Member of Parliament Gavin Williamson to discuss cross-Strait relations and regional dynamics. This meeting not only highlights the friendly relations between the two parties but also underscores the international community's support for Taiwan's democracy.

Chiou expressed gratitude to Williamson for his foresight in prioritizing Indo-Pacific security issues during his tenure as the UK Secretary of State for Defence and for his long-standing commitment to supporting Taiwan. Williamson noted that during his time as Defence Secretary, he ordered Royal Navy vessels to navigate through the Taiwan Strait, an action that drew protests from Beijing but exemplified a resolute stance against bullying. He emphasized that this action demonstrates concrete support for Taiwan.

In his first visit to Taiwan in 17 years, Williamson remarked on Taiwan's significant growth in various aspects and its increasingly vital role in the global landscape. He asserted that democratic countries should stand by Taiwan and collaborate in countering authoritarian regimes. Williamson advocated for each democratic nation to deepen their relationships with Taiwan to safeguard shared values of democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law.

Furthermore, Chiou discussed the complexities and sensitivities of cross-Strait relations, emphasizing that these issues are crucial for the survival of the Taiwanese people and Taiwan's future development. He pointed out that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are indispensable to global security and prosperity. The government remains committed to maintaining the peaceful status quo in the Taiwan Strait and hopes dialogue can occur on mutual respect and equality without preconditions.

Chiou emphasized that while the government has ideals for peace, it does not harbor illusions. In facing the multifaceted threats and challenges from the Chinese Communist Party, the government will fully implement President Lai's 'Four Pillars of Peace Action Plan,' enhancing resilience in economy, society, and security while seeking to deepen cooperation with countries like the UK that share similar values.

This meeting showcases Taiwan's increasingly significant position in the international community and the importance of advancing partnerships with global allies.
