Mr. Wang Jiahua, who once served as the Director of the Secretarial Office of the Presidential Office under late President Chiang Ching-kuo and General Manager of Taiwan Television Enterprise, sadly passed away due to a stroke on March 16 at the age of 76. This news has left the media community in deep shock and sorrow. The family has scheduled a memorial service to be held at 9 AM on March 28 at the "Zhizhong Yiting" in the first floor of Huai'ai Hall, Xinhai Road 2, Taipei City. The accomplishments of this television pioneer are deeply missed by the world!
Mr. Wang Jiahua was born in 1949 in Wenxian, Henan, and graduated from the 17th class of the news department of the Political Warfare School and earned a Master's degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri in the United States. In 1976, he served as the English secretary and aide to Chiang Ching-kuo and was appointed as a Colonel Army Attaché at the Presidential Office and Director of the Secretarial Office in 1978. From 1988 to 1993, he served as the General Manager of Taiwan Television Enterprise, achieving an outstanding academic and professional career, becoming a pioneer in the history of Taiwanese television.
In the early days, Taiwan's television had only three channels: Taiwan Television, China Television, and Huashi Television. The early general managers of Taiwan Television, including the first generation Zhou Tianxiang, the second generation Liu Kanru, the third generation Shi Yonggui, and the fourth generation Wang Jiahua, were all excellent managers. During that period, Taiwan Television's programs and news viewership always ranked among the top of all major channels, and the contributions of the general manager were indispensable. Wang Jiahua spent five years at Taiwan Television, during which he received recognition from internal colleagues and praise from the outside world for his relentless efforts.
During his tenure, he hired a design company to completely overhaul Taiwan Television's identity system, known at the time as the CIS system, a move that also sparked considerable controversy. Furthermore, in 1992, when the board chairman of Taiwan Television was Chen Chongguang, a former provincial councilor, Taiwan Television's financial status was sound; however, they laid off all local reporters from around the island, including Kinmen, Mazu, and Penghu. These local reporters had devoted over twenty years of youth to news reporting, often going up mountains and down to the sea, working without breaks, always ready for missions day and night. As the Labor Standards Act had not yet been implemented at that time, they were unable to receive retirement funds; this decision led to a collective backlash from local reporters who engaged in legal battles with the company. However, the reason behind General Manager Wang Jiahua's decision remains unknown to this day.
As time goes on, the merits and demerits of Wang Jiahua will be fairly discussed by future scholars.
