Mr. Wang Jiahua, who previously served as the Director of the Presidential Office's Secretarial Office, Chief Secretary, and General Manager of Taiwan Television, unfortunately passed away from a stroke on March 16, at the age of 76. After the news broke, the media community felt quite shocked and saddened. His family will hold a memorial service on March 28 at 9 AM at the "Zhi Zhong Yi Ting" in the Jingxing Building of the Hualai Funeral Home on Xinhai Road, Taipei. As a pioneer of television, Wang Jiahua's achievements are unforgettable.
Mr. Wang Jiahua was born in 1949 in Wenxian, Henan. He graduated from the 17th session of the News Department of the Political Warfare School and earned a Master's degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri. He served as English secretary and aide to Chiang Ching-kuo in 1976, then held the positions of Colonel Army Attache of the Presidential Office and Director of the Secretarial Office from 1978. From 1988 to 1993, he was the General Manager of Taiwan Television Company, where his educational and professional achievements were outstanding, making him a pioneer in the history of Taiwanese television.
In the early days, Taiwan television was limited to three stations: Taiwan Television, China Television, and Huashi Television. General Managers of Taiwan Television, including Zhou Tianxiang, Liu Kanru, Shi Yonggui, and Wang Jiahua, were all excellent managers. At that time, Taiwan Television undoubtedly led in program and news viewership ratings, which was closely tied to the efforts of the General Managers.
During Wang Jiahua's five-year tenure as General Manager of Taiwan Television, he received recognition from colleagues and praise from outside. Among his notable actions was hiring a design company to comprehensively replace Taiwan Television's identification system, known as the CIS system, which sparked considerable controversy. Additionally, in 1992, when Chen Chongguang, a former provincial councilor, served as Chairman, Wang Jiahua oversaw an excellent financial situation for Taiwan Television but suddenly decided to dismiss local reporters across the country, including those in Kinmen, Matsu, and Penghu. These local reporters had dedicated over twenty years of their youth to Taiwan Television, ready to undertake missions day and night, and at that time, the Labor Standards Law had not yet been implemented, meaning they did not receive retirement pensions. This decision triggered a collective lawsuit from the local reporters, but the reasons behind General Manager Wang Jiahua's decision remain unknown to this day.
The philosopher has departed, but his legacy endures. The merits and faults of Wang Jiahua will surely be recorded justly by historians.
