Chiang Wan-an and Lai Shih-pao Face Public Backlash in Taipei Street Campaign

In response to the growing wave of recall efforts, the Kuomintang (KMT) initiated its 'Patriot Action Trilogy' campaign. This morning (14th), Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an supported KMT legislator Lai Shih-pao by visiting the Qimei Market in Wenshan District to promote a vote against the recall. However, during interviews, they encountered pro-recall citizens who shouted, 'Big recall, big success!' causing an awkward moment that required immediate police intervention to maintain order.
Lai Shih-pao expressed his determination to boost voter turnout, noting that Chiang Wan-an's support will greatly benefit his cause. He mentioned that the KMT's supporters generally have a favorable view of Chiang Wan-an, and emphasized his own commitment to serving the public, questioning why he should face a recall if he has been performing well at both central and local levels.
Regarding whether he would invite Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu to help with campaigning, Lai indicated that they plan to hold two large events closer to the voting date in late June to July, which will also feature former broadcasting chairman Chao Shao-kang and former President Ma Ying-jeou.
As for the 'Patriot Action' efforts, Chiang Wan-an stated that he joined Lai at the Qimei Market to greet local residents and encourage them to vote against the recall. He earnestly urged voters to cast their votes against the recall to display their trust in his administration.
When asked about strategies for opposing the recall, Chiang Wan-an simply mentioned that the central party has planned accordingly, and that the Taipei city party will continue to engage with the public in accordance with the characteristics of their respective districts.
Additionally, when asked about former President Ma Ying-jeou attending the Strait Forum without any support from KMT mayors, Chiang Wan-an sarcastically commented that the DPP's founding member Hong Chi-chang is leading a biotechnology exchange in Beijing which the Mainland Affairs Council views positively, suggesting a consistent standard should be applied in judging such actions.
During his interview, a man wearing a striped polo shirt suddenly interrupted by shouting 'Big recall, big success!' and was quickly subdued by the on-site police. Protesters shouted at the two politicians, demanding, 'What have you both contributed to Taipei? Big recall, big success!' The police managed to escort the man away, but the public's anger lingered, leading some to shout at the police, 'I need to buy things, don't touch me!'
